So what is the importance of demographic catagories? Is there a method to our madness, a reason that our society continues to sort people into black and white, muslim and hindu? There is no importance visible to my eye. I see no importance existant in creating demographic catagories in which we demote and promote certain ethnicities and races. However, for the purpose of writing, reading, education in general it becomes neccessary to address ethnical backgrounds and racial groups. No matter how hard we try to move forward, history will always have a place of influence creating biases within and towards different demographical groups.
You are given two excerpts in class about slavery, written by two authors alive during the era. One is written by a an African-American author, the other by a middle class white man. The two accounts are going to have dramatic differences, but will also provide us with the opportunity to have all the facts and create our own biases an opinion from what we have in front of us. This concept is what our education system should be based off of; logically making an argument without the influence of propagandas definition of diversity. Until we reach the point (which may very well never happen) where we are able to look at the candidates for president and not have the color of their skin influence our vote, we have to continue to be forced to learn from all sides of the demographical map.
